AI: future is now, by Edgar Alán Arroyo Cisneros

AI has risks and legal challenges, taking into account that around it orbit technological, economic, and power struggles in general, waged not only by major superpowers but also by wild forces -starting with criminality- real sources of power or de facto powers throughout the world.

On the occasion of a letter signed on March 22 by various technological, academic, and other leaders at the international level, we saw that this epistle sought to halt the rapidly accelerating and revolutionary developments that AI has undergone in recent years, before it’s too late.

Well, another public communication, in May, filled the headlines of the leading media outlets around the globe: over 350 executives, engineers, workers, and researchers working at some of the most renowned AI corporations warn the following in a concise statement: “mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal scale risks, such as pandemics and nuclear war.” Among the signatories are CEOs of companies like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic, which are currently some of the most relevant in the field at hand.

This accumulation of letters to the global public opinion must be taken seriously enough by those who make decisions, especially in developed countries, as it is in these countries that AI has evolved in an astonishing way very recently. And just like in any scientific and technological advancement, there are aspects that have two sides, just like a coin: one completely positive that contributes to social progress, but another full of clouds and gray areas that can not only be negative but, as the mentioned leaders warn, could jeopardize the survival of the human species.

Two aspects of the late May declaration stand out: first, the fact that the word “extinction” is used with all that it implies. Apologists of disaster may find in this a powerful breeding ground to structure all kinds of conspiracy theories, but the truth is that glimpsing an anticipated end of civilization speaks to the level of concern that AI carries.

Secondly, it is included in the list of planetary emergencies that we must deal with in the short term, very much in the terminology of some of the most renowned philosophers and thinkers in the world, such as Luigi Ferrajoli; indeed, according to the emeritus professor of the University of Roma Tre, at present we are experiencing emergencies and catastrophes in ecological, nuclear, armament, labor, and migratory fields, to which AI must be added.

In conclusion, if the main developers of AI advocate directly or indirectly for a broad deliberation on its regulation, we would have to get to work. The future is today; the future of homo sapiens could be hanging in the balance if we ignore it.

  2. Yes, it is very true that AI is one of the great problems that we experience today, but the actions of these problems must be urgently addressed because it is a big problem either due to cybernetic attacks by other people who do not handle this well. effect, if it is true, AI can also help us in many aspects

  3. The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) has been a prominent phenomenon in recent decades, and although it has brought numerous benefits, it has also raised concerns about possible dangers and more so in the field of law, where if there is no adequate regulation, can become a double-edged sword, helping to commit crimes that cannot be penalized

  4. I find it interesting how the great leaders talk about the issue, clearly emphasizing the importance of regulating these artificial intelligences for human survival. Although it may sound very futuristic, we are on the path to artificial intelligence taking dark paths if we do not adapt it to current needs.

  6. AI is evolving at an alarming pace, and there’s a growing fear that it could pose a serious threat to humanity. That’s why a bunch of smart folks from top AI companies are urging us to take action before it’s too late. They’re saying that we need to start talking to each other and figuring out how to use AI safely and ethically. This is no time to be messing around. We need to get serious about this stuff now.

A statement from more than 350 AI professionals stands out warning about the risk of extinction and placing it as a global priority along with pandemics and nuclear wars. The article highlights the seriousness of the use of the term “extinction” and positions it as a planetary emergency. It concludes by emphasizing the importance of addressing AI regulation urgently, as its impact could endanger human survival.

  11. This article talks about the danger that AI can be, to the point that the main AI developers consider regulation of these necessary, however if the creators of AI themselves consider regulation of these necessary, it should be an issue of global priority, before it is difficult to do something about it, since as we well know, AI has evolved faster than expected and this has become a problem for humanity in general.

  12. “I believe it is quite evident that AI has evolved into a significant advancement, bringing potential repercussions for society, as mentioned in the text, such as in wars or pandemics. Take, for example, the COVID-19 pandemic, where thousands of people died due to a virus whose origins remain unclear to this day. While some attribute it to a person consuming a bat, this hypothesis is not scientifically proven. This topic presents a dual dilemma, as despite the remarkable growth of AI, the mystery behind the pandemic’s origin remains unresolved.”

In addition, it includes on the list of global emergencies along with other urgent problems such as ecological, labor and migratory challenges.

If AI experts advocate for broader regulation, it is crucial that we pay attention and take action. The future and survival of humanity could be at stake if we ignore the risks of AI. It’s time to start working on this topic.

  16. If the people who are specialized and little more familiar with these issues, it is essential to take their suggestions as something essential and not let them pass who else than the developers themselves to take the approach of the things that could go wrong if this is not taken in a way correct and accurate and in a short period of time to avoid any global catastrophe

  17. We are at the right time to take preventive measures in the face of the rapid development that artificial intelligence is presenting, if it is not done now in the future we will regret it because as we know the law is always created after the facts and we do not always have the opportunity to regulate something new from its beginning
